Communications Manager

The Carpentries is committed to “training and fostering an active, inclusive, diverse community of learners and instructors who promote and model the importance of software and data in research.” We seek an engaged and collaborative individual who shares this vision for a full-time position as the Communications Manager for The Carpentries. The Communications Manager will execute the day-to-day internal and external communications workflows necessary to keep our community informed and engaged. The Communications Manager’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the curation and development of content for The Carpentries Blog and Newsletter
  • Peer mentorship and editorial role around content creation for our websites and blogs
  • Crafting and scheduling communications, messages and responding in a timely fashion on The Carpentries’ social media channels
  • Recruiting, onboarding, and overseeing a Communications Committee
  • Developing resources (ex. community briefs, press kit) for local Carpentries community members to market their training events, communityevents and give presentations
  • Executing The Carpentries Communications Strategy and Implementation Plan
  • Identifying relevant community discussions across socials for further research and follow up
  • Supporting The Carpentries team with project communications, outreach messages for different campaigns and quarterly work
  • Creating, revising and maintaining community resources, and guiding the creation of these resources (guides, checklists, video and audio content, etc.) for The Carpentries community
  • Supporting the Executive Director, team leads, and Executive Council on strategic communications

The Carpentries is an open, global community teaching the skills and perspectives to turn data into knowledge. We build capacity in essential data and computational skills for conducting efficient, open, and reproducible research. We believe in a world where more people have the computational skills and perspectives to work with data to address their questions in science, scholarship and society. We aim to build that world by scaling evidence-based teaching, creating inclusive environments, and building communities of practice based on open principles. In this role, you’ll join a diverse team of professionals working to spread data-driven research skills. Our community comprises 50,000 learners, 2,000 instructors, 80 Trainers, and 85 member organisations from research institutions around the world.

We are looking for someone with skills and perspectives that complement our existing team and enthusiasm for the role and the goals and approaches of our organisation.

Required:

  • Degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or equivalent experience
  • Experience with social media and/or blogging
  • Experience working with volunteer and/or online communities
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a professional or volunteer setting
  • Excellent time management and project management skills
  • Ability to work virtually with a distributed team

Preferred:

  • Post-graduate degree or experience in Communications
  • Experience with intercultural or multi-linguistic communications (i.e. experience with multilingual communities)
  • Experience in marketing, advertising, or public relations
  • Experience as a Carpentries community member
  • Experience building or executing community campaigns
  • Creative writing experience
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following: Git, GitHub, R, Python, SQL
  • Familiarity with the open-scholarship, open-source community
  • Experience working with non-profit organisations or projects

About Us

We’re a core team of eleven staff and independent contractors, with a nine person Executive Council. We’re a fiscally sponsored project of the 501(c)3 Community Initiatives. We have a large community of instructors and contributors, and a much larger community of users. We use evidence-based teaching practices to teach the core skills for effective computational and data work, and we promote reproducible research and open science/open source widely. All interactions in The Carpentries community and spaces, both virtual and in-person, are governed by our Code of Conduct.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a remote position and is initially funded for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. For US-based candidates, compensation will be $61,600 - $83,600 USD annually, commensurate with experience. Outside the US, total compensation may need to be adjusted in accordance with legal and financial costs associated with international hiring and contracting for a US-based entity.
