The Carpentries Partnership Program is Now Live!
After many months in the making, we are thrilled to announce that The Carpentries Partnership program is finally launching today!
This is an exciting outcome of efforts by The Carpentries Core Team and broader community to redesign our former Membership program into a program that is responsive and best meets the needs of our partnering organisations and institutions.
Over the coming weeks, we will release a series of blog posts expanding on the value of having a Partnership with The Carpentries. In this blog post we provide an outline of the service offerings that can be included in a Partnership agreement beginning today.
Website and Handbook Updates
Before we get into details, please note that all the relevant pages of our website and Handbook have been updated with information pertaining to the Partnership program. Comprehensive information is provided in the following resources:
Should you have any questions about the information in these pages or any other query regarding the Partnership program, please connect with us at partnership@carpentries.org or schedule a meeting with our team.
Key Features of the Partnership Program
Maximally flexible
As mentioned in our blog post introducing the Partnership program, a Partnership agreement can be tailored to suit varying institutional needs. Unlike our retired Membership tiers, which did not always align perfectly with unique institutional needs, the Partnership service levels are maximally flexible, enabling each Partner institution to build the service package that works best for their team.
Each Partnership package comes with a set number of service options, which can be distributed across the following options:
- one (1) workshop using one of our data science or computational skills courses, or
- two (2) seats in a certification program (either Instructor Training or Collaborative Lesson Development Training), or
- four (4) seats in our new Learner-Centered Teaching program, or
- sixteen (16) seats in one of our new short-format Professional Development Sessions, or
- any fractional combination of the above - for example, one Instructor Training seat and 8 seats in a short-format professional development course would count as one service option.
The Launch service level allows a Partner to choose one of the above service options. Expand, Scale, and Transform Partnership packages include three, five, and eight service options, respectively.

More benefit options
The Partnership program also offers a wider variety of benefit options. In addition to Partners having access to our workshops and certified training programs, the new Partnership program introduces additional service offerings:
- a single-day variant of our Instructor Training course, called Learner-Centered Teaching. This course provides generalised preparation for educators new to evidence-based teaching methodologies, and equips participants with the strategies and tools necessary to use effective, hands-on teaching practices, without the expectation to become certified Carpentries Instructors.
- short-format (2-3 hour) Professional Development Sessions, that will keep our Partners’ teams’ skills relevant to the evolving digital workplace. Initial offerings available are listed on our website. We will be developing and releasing new courses periodically.
Discounts available for Partners
To recognise the impact community members have on The Carpentries in a range of roles, the Partnership program will offer discounts to Partner Organisations with members actively contributing as Instructor Trainers, Lesson Developer Trainers, Code of Conduct Committee Members, and Centrally Organised Workshop Instructors.
Our goal is to provide recognition for community members’ time, with community service being recognised by their institution. The benefit for us is that having Partner organisations formalise their community member’s service helps us accurately plan our capacity.
Additionally, while non-Partners can purchase all of the described services, Partner organisations receive a significant monetary discount, both for the base Partnership package and for any additional services purchased during their Partnership term.
To find out more about our pricing, please visit our Pricing page. All prices are listed in USD and are applicable to academic, government, and non-profit institutions in high-income countries. Organisations in middle income, lower middle income, and low income countries will pay 75%, 50%, and 25% of the listed price, respectively. Payments can be made in USD or local currency (subject to restrictions).
A Note on Retiring Our Sponsorship Program
As The Carpentries continues to evolve, we have made the decision to sunset our Sponsorship program. While this model has supported important work in the past, it no longer reflects how we want to engage with and support our global community.
Moving forward, we are focusing our energy on the Partnership program, which offers a more flexible, collaborative, and values-aligned approach. We invite our community to engage with us through this new model as we continue to build sustainable, impactful relationships that advance data and computational skills worldwide.
Acknowledgement of Support
We would not be at this stage of the Partnership program without the support of our community, particularly their feedback to our community surveys in September 2024 and in September 2025.
We also wish to thank the Membership Model Taskforce that distilled the community feedback into recommendations that form the basis of the Partnership program we are launching today.
Additionally, we thank the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for furthering our goal to improve the coding and data skills of researchers by supporting the organisational sustainability and capacity of The Carpentries.
Today’s launch would not have been possible without all of you, and for that we are so grateful.
