Recognising Our Global Contributors: Glosario’s Next Chapter
At The Carpentries, every contribution matters. Our community includes individuals from many countries, languages, and backgrounds. Together, we are building Glosario, a free and open glossary of computing and data science terms in many languages. By the end of 2024, Glosario included translations in more than 26 languages. This would not be possible without the hard work and time shared by our global contributors. As Glosario grows, we want to make it easier for more people to join in, and ensure everyone’s work is recognised and appreciated.
Why Recognition Is Important
Individuals help open source projects in many ways: writing guides, reviewing other people’s work, translating content, or sharing ideas. These contributions all take time and effort. We want to thank everyone who helps Glosario grow - not only those who write code but also those who support the project in other ways.
How We Are Recognising Contributions
In 2025, with continued support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, we launched a new way to recognise contributors. We are using the All Contributors bot on GitHub to thank everyone who has helped.
We now show credit for four types of contributions:
- 📖 Documentation and Planning – Individuals who helped write the contribution guide, organise ideas, or plan how Glosario works.
- 👀 Pull Request Reviewers – Individuals who read and gave feedback on new suggestions to improve the project.
- 💬 Discussion Participants – Individuals who participated in conversations to help make decisions or solve problems.
- 🌍 Translators – Individuals who translated words and meanings to make Glosario useful in many languages.
As of 12 May 2025, 206 contributors are now listed on the Glosario Repository. It is a simple but powerful way to make every contribution visible.
Building a Kind and Inclusive Community
We aim to create a glossary and a kind, welcoming, and inclusive community. We want people from all over the world to feel that their voices are recognised and valued.
We are also wanting to improve how people contribute. We hope to include better instructions, easier tools, and helpful videos. These changes will make it simpler for new contributors to join and help grow Glosario.
Thank you if you have translated a word, joined a discussion, reviewed a pull request, or helped in any other way. Glosario is a community effort, and your work makes a real difference Would you like to get involved?
